I am a practicing artist and art educator in the Department of Fine Arts at Winthrop University, South Carolina.
Since graduating from traditional training at Art College in Scotland in 1972, I have continued to develop my work in painting, drawing, collage and mixed-media. Subject matter for my work varies widely but could be broadly described as landscape-based. Everything that I experience is potential for my work, whether at home or traveling, observed or imagined. I am actively engaged as an artist on an on-going basis and exhibit locally, regionally and nationally in this country and, formerly, in Great Britain.
I have been the recipient of numerous grants in support of my work, notably from the South Carolina Arts Commission, the Arts & Science Council of Mecklenburg County, NC, and from Winthrop University, SC, where I have been employed as a professor of art since 1988. Meritorious achievements include one-person exhibitions in Washington DC, and two-person shows in NYC. I have had work purchased for numerous private and corporate collections including the SC Arts Commission permanent collection and MUSC ‘Carolina Contemporary Collection’. I was awarded an Affiliate Artist residency at McColl Center for Visual Art, Charlotte, NC in 2006.
My work, which primarily consists of abstract acrylic painting on canvas, emanates from my experience of different places under one large, overall theme entitled ‘Other Worlds’. While the work differs from series to series, each series is connected by common threads that reflect my experience of these particular places, or ‘worlds’, sometimes directly, often subconsciously. Line, shape, color and space are intuitively manipulated until they find their exact place in the piece as I strive to capture the essential nature of these subjects through drawing, painting and collage, and abstraction.
